What exactly, you may ask, are construction crews up to this week? During the library renovation, the entire library will be housed in what is now the children’s wing of the building. That building will be separated and become a stand-alone structure while renovations are made to the other half of the building. Construction will involve the area that is now the library’s current parking lot.
This week, construction crews are clearing what has been our overflow parking area in order to make a gravel-covered temporary parking lot to provide access to the temporary library during the renovation. They area also digging trenches to install independent water and electrical lines for the temporary library, as water and electricity are currently tied to the other half of the building. While the removal of shrubbery and some trees may look alarming, the Planning Board has taken care to identify trees to be preserved, including a 70-year-old Norway Maple. Sometime next Spring and Summer, landscapers will begin bringing in the new plantings that will complete the approved site plan.
Inside the building, construction crews are making necessary changes to bring the building up to code once it is separated from the rest of the structure. What was a kitchen is being renovated into a second bathroom, and the existing bathroom is being renovated at the same time. (Bathrooms are currently available for the public on the other side of the building, downstairs, beneath the adult library.) Up next: Construction crews will continue to make the system updates in the Children’s Library to enclose the 2 lift shafts, add a dry sprinkler system and convert the existing Community Room storage area into temporary office space for staff. During the week of January 5th through January 12th the Library will be closed to the public so that movers may relocate shelving and collections from the adult library to the Community Room, thus completing the conversion of the Children’s Library into our temporary home. We anticipate that demolition of the connector will occur in February.
