We are pleased to offer Thomas Memorial Library users access to Transparent Language Online. This web-based language-learning program offers more than 80 languages, including English as a Second Language for a variety of non-native English speakers. You can access the courses within the library, on your own computer at home, or on a mobile device via a free mobile app.
This language-learning program is great for learners of all levels. It offers top-of-the-line coursework combined with great additional resources such as a web-based flash card system known as Byki, personal progress tracking, pronunciation analysis, language & cultural resources, and much more.
How does Transparent Language Online work?
Transparent Language Online takes users through a series of simple steps to memorize words and phrases in a new language, including their meanings and correct pronunciation–all packaged together in an easy-to-use interface that can be accessed at any time and from any computer with Internet access.
Transparent Language Online is a unique application that bridges the gap between learning a language online and using that language in the real world by allowing users to do both in one program. It features a scientifically-proven methodology, a wide variety of high-quality learning material, and seamless integration of real-life language use by native speakers.
In addition to Transparent Language Online’s advanced learning tools, users have access to an array of online language and cultural resources including one-click access to Facebook and Twitter language communities as well as Transparent Language Online language blogs which feature a collection of articles covering the language and the culture that surrounds it.
How do I set up an account?
If you are registering within the library, all you need to do is choose a username and password to set up an account. From outside the library, you will also need your Thomas Memorial Library card. The first time you visit the Transparent Language website, select Sign Up Now to create your account. You will need that username and password to return for more sessions. You will also be prompted to take a “Guided Tour” and learn more about getting started with Transparent Language Online.
Using Transparent Language Online
Once you have registered, you can use the program from any computer with an Internet connection or “on the go” with a mobile device. Enter through the Thomas Memorial Library website and login at Transparent Language Online with your your username and password. Select a language and begin. The program offers help screens and FAQ to assist you. It also keeps track of your progress.
Mobile App
The Transparent Language Online mobile app is available free on the App Store for Apple® iPad™, iPhone® or iPod® touch or Google Play for Android devices. Search for Byki Community Edition and follow the instructions to download and install.
From the Transparent Language website, click on Go Mobile to learn more about downloading the app. There you will receive another individual access code to verify your Library edition of this app. Save this code as it is your log in credentials with the mobile app. Internet access is only required for installation, activation, downloads, and Twitter searches; your data rates may apply.
What is Byki
